Florida International University footbridge collapse
On 15 March 2018, the 862t main span of a concrete and steel footbridge under construction in western Miami collapsed on to the busy road below, killing six people and injuring 10. The structure had been designed to give pedestrians and cyclists safe passage over a multi-lane highway between the main campus of Florida International University (FIU) and a popular residential area for students. This in-depth explainer highlights the main factors that contributed to the catastrophic failure at FIU. These started with a lack of understanding among key stakeholders of the bridge’s uncommon design and ended with the engineer of record’s poor judgement when faced with seemingly obvious signs of a structure in distress days before its collapse.
